Christian Pulisic is quite easily the biggest football star in all of America. He’s the captain of the country’s football team, the USMNT, and also won the UEFA Champions League this season with his club, Chelsea. As a result, any sponsorship or partnership with Pulisic is all the more important for a brand.

Therefore, the announcement of Pulisic joining Puma came as a huge surprise to several people. The 22-year-old was an athlete for Nike, one of the biggest sports brands in the USA. He talked about this change in an interview with Complex and revealed why signing with Puma appealed to him so much.

Puma just fit in with exactly the message that I want to send. I think we’re trying to inspire players just to get out and play any way they can and play the game and grow the game of soccer in America. And it lined up exactly with what I was feeling, and it just seemed like a perfect fit,” Pulisic said.

The interviewer asked Pulisic if he’ll have a bigger say in the operations with Puma than with Nike, and the American revealed that this was a huge reason for his change.

Absolutely, I think I will. I think that’s, I mean one of their biggest points and another massive reason why that seemed like an easy choice is because yeah, they want me to give my ideas, talk about what I like and that they want to see that and use that as well,” he said.

When he was asked about his favorite sneakers from Puma, Christian Pulisic didn’t have a definite answer. While he did single out the Puma Suedes, he said that he didn’t have an ideal shoe.

“I mean, that’s tough to say—my favorites from the Pumas. I definitely love these Puma Suedes. So something very nice, very chill, that I think is an instant classic. So I love wearing these, but my ideal one. Yeah, I don’t have something like that,” he revealed.
