Which USWNT Stars Have Been Nominated for the Ballon d’Or 2021 Award?

The Ballon d’Or is one of the most prestigious football awards of all time. Lionel Messi has won it six times and remains the best player in the world. Similarly, the best women soccer players receive the Ballon d’Or Féminin award.

Recently, the list of players nominated for the award was revealed, and it consists of some very talented players. However, only one USWNT player makes the list this time around.

Samantha Mewis makes the list for USWNT

There are 20 women nominated for the award. As Barcelona won the Champion’s League last time around, there are 5 players from the club that have been nominated. Although there is no Megan Rapinoe this time around, there are many talented nominations for this year’s award. Rapinoe took home the award in 2019 when the award was last handed out.

Chelsea has several exceptional players involved in this year’s Ballon d’Or Féminin award. Magdalena Eriksson, Sam Kerr, Pernille Harder, Jessie Fleming, and Kirby are some of the players who are involved in this year’s nominations. The USWNT is amongst the best teams in the world and therefore many expected to see more players for the team nominated for the award.

Can Mewis win the award?

As the golden age of USWNT has retired, Samantha Mewis is the current leader of the team. She had a stint with Manchester City but re-signed with North Carolina Courage to continue her career. She spoke in excitement about the experience she had with the club.

“My time at Man City was incredible. I have nothing but good things to say. I really think that I learned a lot and gained so much from my experience there. Staying would have been another great opportunity for me.”

“I just feel like right now this is the best place. I’m definitely open to anything in the future but I’m really happy to be home with the Courage,” said Mewis.

While Mewis is the only USWNT player to make the Ballon d’Or list, there are many other incredible players nominated for the award. Therefore, fans are excited to know the winner of this prestigious award.
