Cristiano Ronaldo is a name that everyone knows. Yes, even the ones who do not watch soccer know who he is. Now that is a different level of fame, right? He is one of the most decorated soccer players in history and widely celebrated for scoring nearly 1,000 official career goals, claiming five Ballon d’Or awards, and winning 35 major club and international trophies, including five UEFA Champions League titles.
Behind that success and glory lies the legacy and backstory of a simple kid from Portugal who had a dream. That heritage remains deeply connected to who he is today and has played a major role in shaping both the player and the person the world admires. So, let’s take a closer look at who Cristiano Ronaldo truly is.
Where is Cristiano Ronaldo from, and what is Cristiano Ronaldo’s nationality?
Ronaldo was born on February 5th, 1985, in Madeira, Portugal. He is 41 years old now and was raised by his extremely hardworking parents, who made sacrifices along the way for his betterment. He grew up in a working-class family and did not come from wealth. He abandoned formal education after the 6th grade to focus entirely on football, eventually moving to Lisbon as a teenager to join the Sporting CP youth academy.
The athlete grew up in Funchal, the capital of Madeira, with his mom, dad, and three siblings. José was a soccer fan and worked as a kit man for a local club, where he would sometimes bring along a young Ronaldo. Meanwhile, Maria worked as a cleaner and a cook in hospitality. Unfortunately, José passed away in 2005, but Ronaldo never forgets to acknowledge him through tributes on social media and by sharing rare stories about him during interviews.
Before his soccer career, though, Ronaldo’s dad had been enlisted to fight for Portugal in the Angolan War of Independence in the ’70s, per ESPN. Upon his return, he began working odd jobs to help support his family. Ronaldo always saw his parents work extremely hard and helped them as well. Today, with their grit and determination and his own perseverance, Ronaldo has definitely made them and his home country proud.

What is Cristiano Ronaldo’s ethnicity?
Ronaldo is Portuguese and proud of it. He still gives most of his interviews in his mother tongue, which is Portuguese. He was always close to his mother, who worked in hospitality 7 days a week to provide everything for him, even sometimes going hungry to give him dinner. He has said before how he dedicated his life to her. However, with his dad, he had a strained relationship because of his alcohol use.
“I really [didn’t] know my father 100 percent,” Ronaldo said per People. “I never spoke with him, like a normal conversation. It was hard.” However, Ronaldo knew how much his dad loved and appreciated him. “He treated me [unbelievably]. I was like the diamond of the family, and he knew that I would be a football player,” Ronaldo explained to Morgan.
During his conversation with Morgan, Ronaldo became emotional after watching a video of his father, which he had not previously seen, in which José spoke about one of his latest games.
“I’m proud to see my son in this situation,” he said in the clip. “I could go to Lisbon to see the final, but my nerves are too much. I get too anxious, I can’t do it. It’s better to see the game on TV.” Ronaldo has always been close to his heritage and roots from his hometown of Madeira. His parents, too, instilled in him the culture and rich heritage of their country. It was always a way of life for the family.
