Where is Ishowspeed From? 

Ishowspeed was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up in the Bond Hill neighbourhood. He did not have a very frolicky childhood since his parents divorced when he was a kid. He was primarily raised by his mother, Tiffany Graves, alongside his younger siblings.

In 2020, a clip of him aggressively reacting to a video game went viral. The resulting internet backlash caused a split with his mother, spurring him to move to Detroit, Michigan, to live with his father, Darren Watkins Sr.

This is where he started his streaming journey and used a PlayStation 4 camera to shoot videos. He attended the Cincinnati College Preparatory Academy. As for his school, Darren went to Purcell Marian High School in Cincinnati, where he played football and basketball. Past footage from his freshman year famously reveals him as a quiet student sitting alone in the front row—a stark contrast to his current persona.

As his online career exploded, he transferred to the Ohio Digital Learning School to adjust his streaming schedule, officially graduating from high school in June 2023. He decided to skip college and concentrate on his million-dollar digital entertainment career.

Darren is an American and was born and brought up in Cincinnati with his single mother. He has also lived with his dad in Detroit, where he started his streaming career.

Darren is an African American man with verified, direct West African heritage from Ghana. He, in fact, has dual citizenship in both the USA and Ghana. 

When he decided to do a highly ambitious month-long Africa tour, he took an official DNA test live on stream. The genetic results returned 100% African. The breakdown revealed that his genetic makeup is rooted in West Africa, precisely matching his family’s oral history.

His mother, Tiffany Elizabeth Graves, is of Ghanaian descent, and their family is in the Volta Region of Ghana. Speed publicly shared during his travels that one of his maternal uncles held a regional kingship (traditional stool rule) within the region. His father, Darren Watkins Sr is African American.

Interestingly, his streams of touring almost 20 countries in Africa got massive traction online. This led to Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, officially approving and granting Speed Ghanaian nationality and an official passport.

During his official homecoming and naming ceremony in Ghana, he was draped in traditional kente cloth and formally bestowed with the cultural stool name Barima Kofi Akuffo.

Darren was overwhelmed when this happened. While launching his live broadcast from Ghana, he said, “I’m back home, bro. Ain’t a better feeling when you know your ancestors are there… I do have a family that is Ghanaian. My mother… my mother’s actually [Ghanaian] on my mom’s side. So this is so tight. It’s exciting to stream here.” 

What is Ishowspeed’s religion? Is Ishowspeed Christian? 

Since Darren grew up in America and was raised in Ohio, he was brought up in a Christian household. He identified as Christian, although he has explored and engaged with Islam as well.

Speed regularly directs his production crew and friends in customary, sincere prayers before embarking on intense stunts, flights, or landmark streaming tours, often explicitly thanking God for his safety and global success.

He continually engages politely with fans who share their faith with him. During a broadcast interaction at a World Cup match, a Norwegian fan approached him to share a Christian message, telling him, “Jesus loves you. God is not a religion; God is a relationship.” Speed heard intently and thanked the fan. Surprisingly, he also fasted during Ramadan, and his fans were pretty shocked. He has documented himself breaking his fasts on stream and learning the traditional steps of Salaat (Islamic prayer).

He has also visited famous Churches and Mosques during his visits to Africa and the Middle East. While fans have speculated that he has converted to Islam, Speed has remained respectful and comedic about his responses.
