At the age of 2, the family decided to move to Fulda, 150 miles away, because of his mother’s bachelor’s degree in the social sciences. Jamal’s mom, Carolin, was his emotional anchor and took responsibility not only for becoming a mother but also for completing her degree so she could earn a better living and give her son a better life.

Daniel Richard, also known as Rich, played at a higher level in his home country of Nigeria before moving to Germany. On the other hand, Jamal’s mother was always standing calmly on the sidelines, cheering for her son while pursuing her own education.

In fact, Jamal himself has spoken about how his mother became his emotional anchor. She was the one who suggested that he could play football in England, even though it’s a big step to move away from Germany.

He represents the German national football team at the senior international level and can speak German and English fluently.  In February 2021, Musiala confirmed that he had chosen to represent Germany at the senior international level. He did admit that he was agonizing over the decision.

Telling The Athletic: “In the end, I just listened to the feeling that over a long period of time kept telling me that it was the right decision to play for Germany, the land I was born in. Still, it wasn’t an easy decision for me.”I have a heart for Germany and a heart for England. Both hearts will keep on beating.”It is difficult to find words for what England means to me because I have so many memories connected to very positive emotions.”

Jamal can now speak English and German, but when he was a kid, he only knew German. He moved to England at the age of 7, and his teachers were impressed by how quickly he learned English. In an interview with the Bundesliga website in 2021, Musiala revealed: “I was once asked in which language I think and dream. Somehow, it’s both: English and German. Both belong to me. I always spoke German with my mother at home”.

Jamal Musiala’s relationship with his parents

Jamal has a very strong bond with his parents, and they did everything they could to make his football dreams come true. Even as she pursued her own studies, his mom never forgot to prioritize her son’s dreams. He moved to England at age 7 and went to school in New Malden.

Since he did not know English, his mother made sure to speak to him in both German and English so he would be fluent in both languages. This keen observation and nurturing were what helped Jamal come so far. On the other hand, his dad was the one who taught him everything important about football and even planned which clubs he should consider. Carolin and Daniel were heavily involved in finding a good football club for their son.

It had been a few days since they moved to Southampton, but every day they were prepared with a plan to find a good club for Jamal.  In October 2010, his parents took the huge step of trying the biggest club in town, that too with no appointment, but with success. The family parked directly in front of the Saints Foundation office. Rich took his son by the hand and entered the building. Once there, the Musialas were lucky enough to come across Jazz Bhatti.

“Rich kept saying what a special talent his son was and that he could go far if he could be placed in a big club’s junior section. A lot of people would have laughed at such a confident statement. I mean, what father wouldn’t say something like that about his son? But Rich was right,” Rosh Bhatti said as per Gaol.com.

This proactive approach from Jamal’s parents has made him the star that he is today. With his hard work and the role his parents played behind the scenes, he is a famous footballer with a great future ahead of him.
