“Sound Is What You Play For”: Roger Federer Excited To Have Crowds Back at Wimbledon Championships 2021

Swiss tennis star Roger Federer is back competing at his favorite event of the season, the Wimbledon Championships 2021. However, things have been different this season as the movement of fans was restricted in the initial rounds. On the brighter side, stadiums have been allowed full capacity during the last five days of the competition.

Recently, Roger Federer spoke about fans being allowed to fill in the stadiums with full capacity. He also revealed that he would have not felt good if he had to lift the trophy in an empty stadium. He remembered the time he played his night session match in Paris and it had barely five people in the stadium.

The 20-time champion spoke on this and stated, “I’m still not 100% convinced we’re on the other side. Last year in the summer we also felt super positive. It looked very promising but then everything changed again. I mean we already felt like 100% to be quite honest because the fans at Wimbledon do such a nice job to make us feel so special. I mean 100% crowd is incredible after playing night session in Paris with five people. Let’s hear some noise and that sound is what you play for.”

Roger Federer is glad upon the allowance of the full capacity stadium

Although crowds are allowed to fill up to full capacity from Wednesday onwards, Federer did not find the crowds less during the previous rounds. The noise and enigmatic atmosphere created by the crowds during these past 10 days has been something that was missing on Tour for most of the past couple of seasons.

The 29-year-old added, “I tried to think back to what would it meant for me if I had to win Wimbledon without any crowds in a final and I was thinking about last year when guys were playing with less crowd or no crowd. It would’ve taken 70-80% of everything away from me. Yes sure I would be Wimbledon champion but it would’ve never felt the same and that’s why I’m so happy that we have crowds back.”

At the moment, Federer is getting set to face Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals. It will be interesting to see how the Swiss ace performs in that match.
