“Would Be a Challenge”: Bjorn Borg Desires to Play Against Rafael Nadal at French Open

Dream matches are always a fascination that fans would love to ponder upon. Swedish Legend Björn Borg, gave away one such scenario that he would have loved to be in. The former world No.1 was all in praise of current world No.3 Rafael Nadal as he revealed he wished to play against the Spaniard in the French Open at his prime. 

Björn Borg is one of the legends of the game, as he has won multiple grand slam singles titles. The 11-time grand slam winner was phenomenal in the clay court as he has won six French Open titles to his name. Hence, Borg’s wish to play against the King of Clay doesn’t surprise many.

During a recent interview with La Web del Tenis, Björn Borg was asked to pick a player he would love to play with. Borg was quick to answer it by picking Rafael Nadal as his choice. He said- “I would have liked to play with Rafa Nadal at Roland Garros, he has been the best ever on the clay court, but my greatest wish would have been to play once, when I was playing Tennis well, with him in Paris; that would have been a dream for me. I’m sure he would beat me, but it would be a challenge in my life.”

Rafael Nadal’s influence on tennis in Spain

Playing against Rafael Nadal in the French open is certainly a dream come true for many players out there. The Spaniard has won a whopping 13 French open titles in his long career. The Former World No.1 is still unbeaten in the semis and the finals of the tournament. Björn Borg, on the other hand, is just behind Nadal when it comes to winning French open titles.

Borg also mentioned how Nadal had influenced tennis in Spain with his successful career. He said- “Tennis is very important for people in Spain, and it will continue to be that way because of Rafa, what he does for sports and tennis, and that is the reason why good players are seen in Spain.”

A match between ‘Prime’ Björn Borg and Nadal would have been a treat for the fans. However, these quotes from Borg reveal how much of a gigantic figure Rafael Nadal is in the world of sports.
