Tokyo Olympics 2020: Tennis Event to See a Major Format Change

As the tennis world braces itself for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics 2020, players have begun settling in the Japanese capital. Superstars such as Novak Djokovic, Naomi Osaka, and the others have arrived for the Games that are scheduled to begin on July 23.
At this year’s edition, the Tokyo Olympics 2020 will see a change in the format of the hard-court tennis events.

Players competing in all sections in the men’s category will have to fight it out in a best of three sets format in the gold medal match. Previously, the match would be played in a best of five sets format.
Similarly, in doubles, the gold medal match will be played in a best of three sets format. However, the final set will be played as a tiebreaker in which the team reaching 10 points first wins the contest.

This year, there are many notable absentees. Players such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams are a few big guns that have decided to skip the event; even Australian star Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn.
The conditions are different this time at the Olympic Games. Players are locked in a bubble and have no access to meet athletes competing in their other sports; all these regulations are due to the effects of the global pandemic.
