Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost has dropped a massive hint at the 2020 Red Bull and Toro Rosso line-up. The Austrian predicted that Alexander Albon will remain at Red Bull to partner Max Verstappen for 2020.

The Thai driver earned an early promotion to the senior team after just 12 races in his Formula 1 career. On the flip side of the coin, Pierre Gasly was dropped by Red Bull after an underwhelming start to 2019.

So far, Alex Albon has proven that he can swim even when thrown into the deep end of the pool. He battled his way from the back of the grid to finish fifth in Belgium and took sixth in Italy.

Albon is one of three candidates for the much contended second Red Bull seat, along with Gasly. Daniil Kvyat is also another contender to team up with Verstappen in the senior squad. However, Toro Rosso boss Tost suggested that the status quo may well remain as they are now.

Speaking to Reuters about a possible return for Alex Albon, Tost said: “Unfortunately I think he’s gone, but you never know what’s going on in Formula 1. I didn’t expect that he is doing such a good job. It’s a positive surprise.”

Two other drivers who have been linked to the vacant seat are Nico Hulkenberg and Sebastian Vettel. Though it was worth noting that Christian Horner wished for a more in-house solution to their conundrum. Needless to say, Franz Tost agreed with that idea.

“I would complain if Red Bull was taking drivers from the outside,” said Tost. “Then we would have a serious problem.

“As long as our drivers are good enough, it’s fine. I am more than happy about this.

“I feel well if a driver goes to Red Bull Racing and wins races. That’s the best. Then we know we did our homework.”
