The Toronto Raptors fans are certainly not doing themselves any favour in the last few days. Earlier, when they faced off against the Golden State Warriors, they cheered jubilantly when Kevin Durant injured his Achilles.

Now, the Raptors fans have sunk to a new low when they spotted Stephen Curry’s parents, Dell and Sonia on their way back to Golden State. Sensing an opportunity to ‘profess their undying love for the Raptors’, they decided to heckle Stephen Curry’s mother. It got to a point where they even dropped F bombs on her.

The good news was that Mrs Curry did not take the insults lying down and retaliated immediately. Now, Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry also responded to the ugly scenes surrounding his team’s NBA Finals opponent.

Speaking to USA Today, he said, “I think it’s kind of stupid, to be honest, in terms of people camping outside our hotel just to yell expletives at either us or our family members, or whatever the case is,”.

Curry also alluded to similar incidents that took place during the Finals, when the Raptors lead the Warriors, 3-2. When Golden State defeated Toronto in Game 2, a Raptors fan made a lewd comment about Curry’s wife, Ayesha. Luckily, the disrespectful fan was arrested and charged with mischief by interfering with the lawful operation of property.

Curry admitted that the joyful reaction of the crowd left him “very confused about that reaction”. He affirmed that it was “not my experience with people of this city.” He added, “I just hope that ugliness doesn’t show itself again, as we go forward in this series.”

Stephen Curry continued, “I think in terms of being in the Finals five years in a row and being on this stage, it’s hard to avoid those interactions with fans that want to kind of impose their, or make their, imprint on the series somehow, in some way, especially with social media these days.”

Fortunately, there were some good apples in the Toronto Raptors basket of rotten ones. Some fans were embarrassed by the negative headlines during the Finals, and apologised on behalf of the team’s supporters. In fact, one Toronto Raptors fans sent Durant a bouquet of flowers with a message reading, “Canada is sorry KD.”

Afterwards, the fan responsible for his remark about Ayesha Curry showed remorse for his act.

“What I did was disgraceful; it was an alcohol-influenced situation,” he said to the Toronto Sun.

He planned to “reach out to Mr. and Mrs. Curry, and that’s realistically who I feel I owe an apology to — and maybe Toronto.”

Curry also stated that “we handle all that stuff with class, and try to ignore it the best we can.” If opposing fans “get something out of it,” he said, “so be it.”

“But it doesn’t affect us at all, in terms of what we’re trying to do and how we carry ourselves as a team, as players and as people that represent us, and our families as well.’’
