Lewis Hamilton wrote a nice message to George Russell after his crash at Imola. The Williams driver was up for a points finish and unfortunately ran his car into the wall. Russell took to Instagram and apologised for his mistake. Lewis Hamilton replied to the tweet and consoled the young driver.
Lewis Hamilton was asked about his views on that message and George Russell at the Drivers Press Conference at Turkish GP. Talking about the message, Hamilton explained that he has been there as well. “I just wanted to show some support,” he said.
Hamilton further talked about George Russell and his future in Formula 1. He stated, “I am really excited to see his progression and I have no doubt that he has the potential to be a future champion.”
Fernando Alonso was also asked his view on the future Formula 1 world champion. He also picked George Russell and stated that his driving is errorless. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton compared Russell’s situation to Alonso.
He said, “I think what he’s been asked to do is similar to Alonso and a lot of drivers coming into one of the teams that is further back, having an opportunity to grow and improve and lead the team.”
George Russell has been phenomenal this season. He has catapulted the Williams car into Q2 in most races. Meanwhile, he has out-qualified his teammate in every single race. He even came tantalizingly close to scoring a point for Williams at Imola.
Lewis Hamilton was impressed by Russell and said, “I think this year he’s just been great. How he’s handled everything and what he’s done with that car to put it into Q2 quite often and really delivering great results.”
“So really impressed with his racecraft and how he is growing,” he further added. George Russell is currently on loan from Mercedes to Williams and is the primary contender for the next Mercedes driver.
Lewis Hamilton is set to win the drivers’ championship at the Turkish Grand Prix. Meanwhile, George Russell will look forward to taking the car into Qualifying 1 and if possible, finish in points on Sunday.
