Lewis Hamilton overpowered team mate Nico Rosberg at the track he last year won his championship to take his 9th pole position of the season. His final lap was 0.216s faster than his team mate’s and marks his first pole position here at the US Grand Prix.

Daniel Ricciardo was third while Max Verstappen fourth who very carefully followed Mercedes into setting their times on the soft compound in Q2 thus splitting the strategy with his team mate.

Lewis still has to nail the start tomorrow after a series of poor starts has had him drop down the order this year. Rosberg although has shown more pace on the softer tires will also be looking to outpace his team mate and gain the very crucial victory at this point in the championship.

The Ferraris were disappointing again with Kimi Raikkonen fifth and Sebastian Vettel sixth. Nico Hulkenberg was the best from the rest in seventh followed by the two Williams of Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa. 10th position wen to Carlos Sainz who got promoted to Q3 after a stunning lap deep into Q2 throwing Fernando Alonso out.
