Fate works in funny ways. Six years ago, Conor McGregor and Paulie Malignaggi met in a square ring. The latter tried to sharpen the Irishman’s boxing skills ahead of his fight against Floyd Mayweather. However, both had a different story to tell about what transpired in their sparring session. Jumping back to the present time, ‘The Notorious’ might cross paths with the American boxer once again.
The former UFC champion would register his presence at the Liam Smith vs. Chris Eubank Jr. II fight. The pair would face each other in a rematch in Manchester, sponsored by Forged Irish Stout. Meanwhile, Malignaggi would grace the commentating duties. But there is another twist to their fateful meeting: a deleted tweet by ‘Mystic Mac’.

The 34-year-old fighter had recently turned to his X-handle and called shots at Malignaggi. “Goes down lovely”, he had announced, posting an image of Malignaggi with a Forged Irish Stout in the backdrop. When the Dubliner wanted to prepare for his boxing debut against ‘Money’, he called Malignaggi and employed his services. He expected to sharpen his skills and give Mayweather Jr. tough competition.
Malignaggi gave McGregor a good first sparring session, despite hanging up his boxing gloves a few months ago. But he remained unsatisfied with his sharpness, and when both faced each other a second time in the sparring session, he felt something was off. He was asked to go all 12 rounds without a break, and as he revealed, “it was more of a personal agenda. There was a dark intention to what Conor was doing.”
