With the loss, Petr Yan fell to 16-3; Aljamain Sterling improved to 21-3.
The bout started with Sterling using his kicks, and Yan took the measured approach. ‘No Mercy’ was able to stuff the early takedown from the champion, Sterling. It was a close round.
In the second round, Sterling finally took down Yan and immediately took his back. The champion put Yan in a position he had not been in inside the Octagon. Sterling dominated the round and perhaps took a 10-8.
Even in the third round, Sterling, after struggling in the beginning, took down the interim champion. ‘Funk Master’ did what he does best on the ground. He took the back and controlled ‘No Mercy’ till the end of the round.
In the fourth round, Yan showed his wrestling prowess. Later on in the round, Sterling took down the back of Yan, but this time ‘No Mercy’ reversed the position, took the top control, and won the round.
