In a recent video, Sonnen explained that while Jones is a great wrestler with excellent take-down abilities, the first thing to deteriorate with age is often the ability to take down an opponent. Sonnen suspects Jon Jones’ skills against these two heavyweights

Chael Sonnen, a UFC legend and former fighter, has expressed doubts about Jon Jones‘ ability to use his wrestling skills against the current top heavyweight fighters, Francis Ngannou, Ciryl Gane, and Stipe Miocic.

He said, “The idea that Jon could go out there, take Francis down and keep him there. Or Stipe or Ciryl Gane. Right, some of these top guys in many way leads you to believe. Yes, Jon’s going to be the champion. Jon is a disaster of a matchup.

I’ll just share with you…the one thing that I don’t expect from Jon. I don’t expect that wrestling to be as sharp as it once was.” He further added. ‘The American Gangster’ also notes that he has seen a decline in his own takedown abilities as he has gotten older. These concerns raise questions about Jones‘ ability to adapt his fighting style and be effective in the heavyweight division.

Chael Sonnen calls Jones a “Trickboxer”

Chael Sonnen has referred to Jon Jones as a “Trickboxer” highlighting the unique and unexpected nature of his fighting style. In particular, Sonnen has praised Jones‘ kicks, noting that they are incredibly powerful and effective. He has also mentioned how Jones is able to surprise opponents with his unpredictable style, making it difficult for them to defend against his attacks.

He said, “I also think that Jon is one of the great ‘Trickboxers’ of our sport. I don’t think he gets credit for that.

He does a lot of damage on his feet. He’ll reach across and hit you in the oblique. It was a kick that we didn’t even know somebody could do until he started doing it.Sonnen further added.

This ‘Trickboxer’ label speaks to Jones‘ versatility and adaptability in the octagon. He is not just a one-trick pony, but rather a well-rounded fighter; who can utilize a variety of techniques and strategies to outmaneuver his opponents. His ability to catch opponents off guard with his kicks and other techniques has helped him earn a reputation as one of the greatest fighters in the sport.

Overall, Chael Sonnen’s assessment of Jones as a ‘Trickboxer’ highlights the unique and formidable nature of his fighting style. It remains to be seen how he will fare against the current top heavyweight fighters. Although his versatility and unpredictability make him a formidable opponent for anyone who steps into the octagon with him.
