Covington has always been a huge pro wrestling fan and idolized Flair while growing up. ‘Chaos‘ joined the UFC in 2014 and was on an impressive run. He was 7-1 in his first eight fights but was still in danger of being cut. Despite being a great fighter, the UFC wasn’t sure about him and something had to change for him and something did change.

After his fight with Demian Maia at UFC Fight Night 119 in Brazil, Covington turned ‘heel’ and berated the crowd. He channeled his villainous side, just what his idol was known for. That interview turned the tide for Covington and since then, he is one of the most talked-about fighters in the world. He has also experienced tremendous success in his career and became the interim welterweight champion.

‘Chaos’ challenged for the undisputed title twice but came up short. But he gave the champion, Kamaru Usman, the toughest test of his career yet. However, according to him, the rivalry between the two is not over and suggested an interesting way of settling it.

Colby Covington wants a best-of-seven series against Kamaru Usman

Colby Covington vs. Kamaru Usman has been one of the closest and fiercest rivalries in recent times. Both men have no love lost for each other and that was visible from their behavior towards each other. The two men also had two of the most exciting title fights in recent times.

The pair first met at UFC 245 in what was an instant classic. They went blow-for-blow and put on a show for the fans. Usman, however, got the better of his rival and won the fight via a fifth-round TKO. Usman defended his title three times after the fight against Covington, and they met again at UFC 268.

The rematch, just like the first fight, didn’t disappoint. They laid everything on the line and put their best foot forward. It was a very close fight with both men rocking each other, but the challenger came up short again, losing via a unanimous decision. But ‘Chaos’ didn’t agree with the decision.

In an interview with MMA Fighting, he was asked about what would mean more, beating a different titleholder to become the champion or beating Usman, title or no title. He said, “Beating Marty Fake Newsman, that’s it. I’m a better fighter than him, (but) we’re so evenly matched that that’s a fight that needs to play out over a championship series — a best-of-seven. That makes sense to do because it’s a such a close fight on paper.”

“We have so many similar attributes in MMA, with our game plans, and our styles. I think if we fought seven times, I beat him four (times),” he added.
