When Beneil Dariush scored a win against the lightweight giant Tony Ferguson at UFC 262, a title shot looked within his grasp. A couple of fights were a realistic scenario. However, before his fight against Islam Makhachev earlier this year, Dariush sustained a leg injury. Thus, derailing his title shot run.

The dynamics have changed since, as Makhachev is scheduled for a title fight. And another UFC luminary, Conor McGregor, is gearing up for his return.

In a recent interview, Dariush discussed the UFC 280 main event, his response to champion Alex Volkanovski, his return fight against Mateusz Gamrot, the dynamics in the division after a win at UFC 280, and his love for Australia.

In the same interview, he expressed his opinion on the probability of McGregor getting a title shot in his comeback fight. As expected, the idea did not sway him, and he further equated it as “spitting in the face of everybody.”

The co-host asked Dariush, “How would you feel if Conor [McGregor] came in and got the shot and what do you think that would do to the division?”

To this, Dariush replied, “Let’s get this guy [Conor McGregor] out of the conversation, man. He’s not even, he’s not, he’s not in title contention. And I know these guys all want to fight him.

Dariush, who is currently on a 7-win streak fight, added further, “But like if they were to make a fight right now, with Conor as a contender. I mean, it’s like spitting in the face of everybody in the top five or top ten. It’s, it’s a joke.”

Dariush continued and referred to McGregor‘s unimpressive lightweight division fighting record. Thus, he said, “The guy hasn’t won a fight in 55, at 55, whatever. Did he even beat Cerrone at 55?”

Conor McGregor’s recent UFC record

As a matter of fact, Conor McGregor marked his lightweight debut in a title fight against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205. Subsequently, he became the first simultaneous UFC two different divisions champion. However, he was stripped out of his lightweight title due to inactivity.

Besides, McGregor’s fight against ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone came in the welterweight division. Surprisingly, that was his only Octagon win after the UFC 205 win. As rightly pointed out by Dariush, it has been years since ‘The Notorious’ last won a lightweight bout.

Therefore, Dariush concludes, “That[Conor McGregor getting a title fight] would be the epitome of a clown show. Like I, I don’t know how else to put it.”
