The dust has settled in the heavyweight division. And it is Ciryl Gane who inches closer to getting a crack at the 265-pound gold after he defeated Sergey Spivak at UFC Paris. Now a win separates him from his redemption against Jon Jones.

‘Bon Gamin’ came into the fight on the heels of an embarrassing first-round loss against ‘Bones’. Hence, the French fighter targeted a return to the winner’s column. Meanwhile, ‘Polar Bear’ was riding on three-win momentum and looked to strengthen his title credentials. But it was Gane who stood tall at the Accor Arena in Paris.

Notably, the French fighter won the fight via knockout in round two in a dominant display.

Gane and Spivak gauged each other, but it was the crowd’s favorite Gane who appeared more relaxed and confident. Further, Gane tried to keep the fight on the feet and fended off Spivak’s takedown efforts. Gane even found a hole in Spivak’s defense as his punches found Spivak’s flesh with every shot.

In the second round, too, Gane appeared to be the busier fighter, and Spivak looked helpless before Gane’s barrage of punches. After tormenting Spivak for the better part of the second round and punishing him near the cage, the referee intervened and stopped the action. The body blows and the jabs had done substantial damage, and therefore, Gane picked another knockout win and threw his name into the title picture.

In the post-fight interview with Michael Bisping, Gane said, “I’m very happy with that… Let’s go to the belt now. It was tough the last time. This is where I belong, and I’m very pleased. My mission is to get the belt.”

Following this, he also touched upon his game plan execution, which he had failed to do in his previous two losses.

“We fucked up, twice—Jon Jones, Francis—but we knew the gameplan. Today I respect the gameplan and you see the results,” he declared. Furthermore, he also didn’t acknowledge Tom Aspinall as his next opponent, leaving the title eliminator in balance.
