Ex-Champ Aljamain Sterling Gives His Verdict as Deiveson Figueiredo Makes a Big Statement at Bantamweight With Win Against Rob Font at UFC Austin

Rob Font did not have a great outing last time out against Cory Sandhagen. He lost that fight via a unanimous decision. Seeking to rectify this at UFC Austin, as he took on bantamweight newcomer Deiveson Figueiredo. However, the American fighter could not grab a win as ‘Deus Da Guerra’ took home the win on his Bantamweight debut.
After the fight, former champion Aljamain Sterling shared a message for the Brazilian about a prediction he made regarding the Brazilian’s bantamweight debut. Let’s take a look at how things went down at UFC Austin.

Both fighters started the fight cautiously. Deiveson Figueiredo took Rob Font down with a takedown, but the latter got on his feet pretty quickly. ‘Deus Da Guerra’ attempted another takedown, yet despite his best attempt, Font escaped that predicament. Figueiredo landed some good strikes but could not capitalize on those attacks. The Brazilian continued his attempt to score a takedown on Font in the second round. However, he threw a knee strike that hit the American in the groin, but they continued fighting.

Deiveson Figueiredo was able to land some great right-handed strikes and took down Rob Font again, but he quickly got up yet again. The former flyweight champion started the third pretty hard and attempted yet another takedown on his opponent, but still could not take and keep him down. Figueiredo hit Font with a strong right hand that wobbled the latter and it seemed the fight was about to end there, but both fighters kept trading strikes.

‘Deus Da Guerra’ successfully scored a takedown this time and attempted to ground and pound, but the American kept resisting it. The final round soon came to a close as Figueiredo took home the win in his first bantamweight fight. This led Aljamain Sterling to share a message for the former flyweight champion. ‘Funk Master’ had a different prediction in his mind. He initially believed that Rob Font would beat Deiveson Figueiredo since he was the smaller guy. However, that was not the case. Sterling said, “This is super impressive from Figgy. I said he’d be too small but he’d be the faster the guy in there and that Font will eventually wear on him put him down.”

Nevertheless, the former bantamweight champion mentioned that Deiveson Figueiredo proved him wrong and was victorious in his first 135 lbs outing. His performance even motivated Aljamain Sterling to move up to the featherweight division. “Figgy proved me wrong and looks great at 135! Thanks for the motivation for my move up,” said ‘Funk Master’.

It might have been just one fight in the bantamweight division, but Deiveson Figueiredo has shown some promise. It will be interesting to see how he fares with other fighters in the division after a unanimous decision win. Meanwhile, Rob Font would be looking to get in the win column again in his next fight.
