After failing to claim the undisputed UFC gold twice, the former UFC fighter Yoel Romero has the third shot at collecting the champion’s title, albeit in a different promotion. The Cuban fighter amassed multiple records and established himself as a top contender during his tenure at UFC. However, even after multiple endeavors, he couldn’t seize the opportunity. After quitting UFC, he joined the rival promotion Bellator in 2020. Despite the initial hiccups and rescheduled fights, ‘Soldier of God’ now finds himself on the cusp of holding a champion’s title.
Yoel Romero gets his first shot at Bellator gold
Notably, the 45-year-old squares off against Vadim Nemkov for the Bellator light heavyweight crown at Bellator 297 on June 16 in Chicago’s Wintrust Arena. Both the fighters were earlier scheduled to face each other at Bellator 290 on February 4. However, the fight couldn’t materialize as the Russian fighter withdrew due to reasons undisclosed.

Markedly, the Olympic silver medalist began his Bellator journey with a loss against Phil Davis in 205 lbs class. Bouncing off after the loss, he racked up impressive wins against Alex Polizzi and Melvin Manhoef. Therefore, putting himself at the forefront of the title race.
