The injury was a deliberate attempt to stop Francis Ngannou
According to Francis Ngannou, a strange man walked into his gym and caused his knee injury on December 28th. The Predator also narrated the turn of events, as if this unfamiliar person deliberately showed up to cause that injury. To possibly disarm him from participating at UFC 270 for his match against Ciryl Gane.
His clash against Jon Jones had to be delayed for a year because of this terrible injury.

The Cameroonian said, “Everything was designed for me to fall and collapse — you know, not to come back. That was it,” “Like, ‘OK, that’s how it’s going to be, let’s go.’”
“The injury happened on Dec. 28, exactly three days after Christmas,” explained Ngannou. On that day, he was training at the gym when a new guy came along who was keen on sparring with the champion. His coach, Eric Nicksick, was against the idea of allowing that German athlete to fight Ngannou.

“We were sparring and I think he got overwhelmed,” and added “He shot a [desperation] takedown, and when I tried to turn around, I heard the crack on my knee.” further detailing the incident that occurred that day.
The Predator will be back to face Jon Jones
Ngannou lay there in pain and recognized that he had sustained a severe injury. “I was so warmed up that I couldn’t feel it, exactly, but I knew something [was] going on. I was hoping that maybe it was just a bad feeling.”

But, the champion pulled through and healed before his big match, through stem cell treatments. And the rest, as they say, is history. Francis Ngannou defended his heavyweight champion belt on 22nd Jan 2022, against Ciryl Gane.
The Predator will return to the Octagon to fight UFC Legend Jon Jones, sometime in 2023.
