The politics of social media were the topic of discussion in The Joe Rogan Experience’s episode 1920. Everyone saw the controversy that surrounded celebrities’ social media accounts. Several people were shadow-banned for various reasons. Twitter and Instagram removed many of them for expressing their political views in public. In the episode, Joe Rogan and Dave Portnoy both discussed their negative social media experiences, despite having a significant amount of followers.

Joe Rogan and Dave Portnoy on the politics of social media

Portnoy discussed how he faced abuse on Twitter for speaking out against repression in social media. He discussed how unfair it is to silence people’s voices on social media. Portnoy acknowledges that he suffered abuse for speaking out against the control the authorities put over people’s freedom of expression. Elon Musk seized control of his Twitter account, and when he felt like he was being silenced, he spoke outright about how startled he was. Not just regular people, but even celebrities are not aware of many actions taken against them on social media. Some issues can be blamed on algorithms and social media companies. Dave continued the conversation by pointing out the important role played by the government in the repression of social media accounts.
