Significantly, after claiming the victory at UFC 281, the #2 lightweight fighter will eye claiming the much coveted lightweight title.

Dustin Poirier’s next title shot

Poirier, who only lost 2 fights after his TKO loss against Michael Johnson in 2016, might have to wait for a while for his shot at the gold. Notably, the current champion, Islam Makhachev, will defend his title against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284 on Feb. 11.

The decision of ‘The Great’ to move up a division for the challenge pushes the next potential title shot somewhere in mid-2023 for Poirier. In addition, considering the former UFC champion, Charles Oliveira complicates the issue further. While ‘do Bronx’ remains the #1 title contender, he has decided to take a break after his UFC 280 loss.

Therefore, the win for the challenger might turn out to be the worst scenario. A win for the Australian fighter might potentially set up a Makhachev vs Volkanovski 2. Thus, pushing him to the third in line for a possible title shot, behind Makhachev and Oliviera.

However, a potential fight between him and ‘do Bronx’ could also be on the cards to determine the next #1 contender.

While the future remains uncertain, the BJJ black belt holder remains hopeful of becoming the undisputed champion in 2023.
