Ciryl Gane humbly declined Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s offer to train in Dagestan to work on his Achilles heal. The Russian fighter extended his aid and asked him to stay there for a year or two. ‘The Eagle’ believed the French fighter could learn about wrestling and hone his wrestling skills in Dagestan. Despite the offer from one of the great wrestlers of the game, he can’t bring himself to leave his more important job.

‘Bon Gamin’ fell short of clinching the title on two occasions when his opponents banked on his shortcomings in wrestling. Francis Ngannou exploited his weakness when both matched for the heavyweight title last year. Not only did he get out grappled, but also suffered the first defeat of his MMA career. The 33-year-old fighter bounced back but again faced a humiliating loss in another title shot at UFC 285. Jon Jones made him tap out within 2 minutes into the match. While he is grateful for Nurmagomedov’s offer, he can’t leave his family behind to go and train in a different country.

A job more important for Ciryl Gane than training in Dagestan

The former Muay Thai fighter informed Mirror Fighting that people underestimated being a father. Leaving his family for 6 months or a year is near to impossible for the fighter who is deeply connected with his family. He could bring in highly skilled trainers to his gym, which is a more viable option for him.

He said, “This is really kind of him [Khabib Nurmagomedov], but I have another job and that’s to be a father. I have two daughters and this is a big job. People underestimate this. To leave my family for six months for me impossible. Some people talk about one year and stuff like that.”

“If I go for two or three weeks, my family misses me a lot. To bring some people to the gym, that is possible. Having those high-level guys in judo, wrestling and boxing,” he added later.

The 11-2 record holder will look to push for another title shot when he headlines the UFC’s second-ever Paris event against Serghei Spivac on September 2 at the Accor Arena.
