With all the ceremonies concluded and press rounds over with, it’s finally Saturday and UFC 269 is upon us. The last UFC PPV event for the year will begin later tonight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

As the fight draws closer, we’ve had many experts comment on the bouts taking place in the event. One particularly interesting insight is from Jon Anik, the longtime UFC play-for-play commentator.

The lead commentator spoke on various topics, including the Dominick Cruz and Daniel Cormier controversy. However, one particularly interesting perspective was the possibility of Amanda Nunes losing her bantamweight strap to Julianna Pena.

Jon Anik realizes the implication it would have on Nunes’ personal life and her legacy as the most dominant female fighter in the world. Regarding ‘The Lioness’ potentially losing, he said, “Right there, right there with the top ones. I mean, certainly, it doesn’t necessarily have the betting number quite as high as some of the historic upsets. I guess when you talk about fighters being north of -1000. But it would be one of the biggest upsets in UFC history.”

“For Amanda Nunes, I talk about her legacy, but in some way, she puts it on the line every time she fights. Because if she loses to Julianna Pena, she’ll get the immediate rematch, but it’s almost like Ronda Rousey and Holly Holmes. Like you walk back into your new life and you are no longer untouchable. I mean, imagine if Amanda Nunes has to fly back to South Florida, and she’s no longer the bantamweight champion. That’s a new life that she’s walking into.”

Julianna Pena accuses Amanda Nunes of dodging their fight before UFC 269

It has taken a lot of time for the UFC matchmakers to set up a fight between Nunes and Pena, as the latter has been trying to book a title shot for herself against Nunes since 2015.

In the pre-fight press conference for UFC 269, ‘The Venezuelan Vixen’ accused Amanda Nunes of ducking her call-outs. Pena said, “When she beat Miesha, she said that she would fight me and she didn’t. She let Ronda Rousey cut the line after she got knocked out.”

Pena also accused Nunes of picking other opponents over her, “You picked a can and you’ve been continuing to pick cans, everybody you pick has already lost or been defeated.”

Replying to Pena’s accusation, Amanda Nunes said, “You never were a contender.”
