MMA is a contest of grit, determination, and skills. There is another aspect of the game that is not talked about enough: cardio. That’s what separates a champion from the rest of the roster. And, therefore, there are two additional rounds of tests a challenger has to go through when fighting in a championship bout. So where do the likes of Dustin Poirier stand on the cardio scale?

The talks of skills vs. cardio dominated the talks of Andrew Schulz and Bradley Martyn when both sat down on the Flagrant 2 podcast. Martyn, a famed bodybuilder, discussed his chances of clashing with Logan Paul and weighed in on their skills and cardio. However, Schulz believed that if it were a grappling contest, the cardio would assume greater significance, citing the example of ‘The Diamond’. What did the comedian have to say about the UFC star?

Dustin Poirier gets scaled on the cardio parameter

Schulz, in the conversation, pointed out how wrestling is a contest of skills. Further, he specified grappling cardio was different. It becomes a crucial aspect in the UFC where BJJ and wrestling remain two of the most employed techniques. While he believed the lightweight fighter had amazing cardio, the actual test came fighting off the ground.

He said, “Grappling cardio is different. I keep telling people. You see this in UFC all the time. You see guys like, this happened to Dustin [Poirier].”

Schulz added, “Dustin Poirier’s cardio is amazing. Any fight, I’ve never seen Dustin get gassed. Throwing to the end of rounds when he’s throwing. But when he has to fight off the ground, it’s a different cardio.

Following this, Martyn chimed in and agreed with the standup comic’s remarks. However, he couldn’t suppress his curiosity and asked whether the American star had put himself to the grappling test. It appeared Schulz had and with none other than his fellow comic, Joe Rogan.
