Daniel Cormier believed Laura Sanko was “truly special” as she made her commentary debut on UFC Vegas 68. Fans, fighters, and pundits alike heaped praise on the first female commentator in modern UFC history. UFC fighter Matt Brown went to the extent of calling her “best commentator” since Joe Rogan. Mere months into her new gig, an ambitious Sanko is already eyeing the coveted seat beside the two greats at the commentators’ desk, even if means dislodging her close friend.

The 40-year-old carved out a space for herself in the commentary world something she felt was an impossible feat. “When I first had the thought in my head, it felt, it felt impossible”, she declared once opening up about her struggles. But her hard work and determination paid off when she called the fights on a February card. Her rise from an MMA fighter to a background reporter and eventually a full-time color commentator is commendable. However, the American commentator believes her journey remains unfulfilled yet.

Laura Sanko has manifested a moment with two of the greats

Touching on her career, the former Invicta fighter spoke to MMA Junkie. Although still learning the intricacies of her new gig, she is not a newcomer. She previously handled the commentator’s duties for Dana White’s Contender Series and, in the process, became the first female commentator in the UFC’s Endeavor era. Currently, in a rotational role, she feels she belongs with Jon Anik and Rogan on a UFC PPV.

She said, “I really look forward to the day where I can sit alongside him [Jon Anik]. When I was trying to manifest that moment, it was definitely Anik in the vision. So hopefully they make that happen soon.”

Further, when asked about whether working with Rogan was on the bucket list, she declared, “Of course, he [Joe Rogan] is. He is great.”

But the famed podcaster is only available on the select PPVs that are held in the United States. Notably, UFC norms dictate a trio of commentators on a desk. Thus, to make space for herself, she might have to dislodge DC, a friend she worked with on the Contender Series in 2021.

Sanko pointed out, “The thing is, I don’t know if they [UFC] would ever put us together. Maybe they would. But I don’t know if they would, and Joe doesn’t do the international [events]. If I had to guess, that would be where they put me first, but who knows.”

The chances of the Chicago native realizing her ambitions will strengthen as she spends more time in her newfound role. Regardless of the time might spend waiting, she has emerged as a role model for some.
