The MMA VAR (Video Assistant Referee) is real, and it shows the decisions are not set in stone in the UFC anymore. When Carlos Ulberg’s victory over Da Woon Jung at UFC 293 was reviewed and overturned, the fans had a field day. As the UFC caravan moved to Sydney, the down-under trip showcased the City Kickboxing gym talent pool. In addition, the fight card offered fans high-paced action and fireworks. But the fans didn’t anticipate what they saw in the prelims’ closing fight from referee Herb Dean.

The Kiwi fighter came into the fight on the heels of an impressive four-win streak. Meanwhile, the Korean fighter had a contrasting fortune as he dropped his previous two fights. Therefore, ‘Black Jag’ stood in the way of steering his UFC career back to winning ways. However, it was Ulberg who stood tall.

Notably, Ulberg won the fight via submission as he made ‘Sseda’ tap out at 4:45 in the final round and would now find himself in the rankings.

What made the fans’ heads turn at UFC 293?

Both fighters sized each other up and quickly unloaded leg kicks at each other. Ulberg mixed inside leg kicks and high leg kicks. Jung, pushing forward, had his moments, but Ulberg was quick to counter with his heavy jabs. Jung’s leg kicks were countered by Ulberg’s explosive outbursts of punches, with the power behind his punches threatening to end the fight. Hence, he had a strong outing in the first round.

Jung’s game plan looked devoid of feints and level changes that made a closely contested fight tip in Ulberg’s favor as the latter’s powerful strikes busted Jung open. Therefore, the contest was fought over Ulberg’s jabs and Jung’s leg kicks.

In the final round, too, Ulberg’s jabs did significant damage. However, Jung also gunned for a takedown, but Ulberg successfully fended off his opponent’s efforts. And in a peculiar turn of events, Ulberg took the fight to the mat and got Jung trapped in a rear naked choke. While it appeared the bell saved Jung, a replay suggested Jung had tapped out in the dying seconds, but the referee, Herb Dean, failed to spot the tap.

After a review, the decision was turned into a submission win for Ulberg. Thus paving his way to break into the rankings. In the post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier, he said, “Anything is possible. I need someone who had the belt before… Dominick Reyes.” Meanwhile, fans had a field day roasting the judgment of Herb Dean and lost no time in calling out the referee.

How did the fans react to Herb Dean’s lapse in judgment?

Ariel Helwani lauded the job done by the group.

A series of comments pointed out that Dean almost had Jung killed as he missed the tap with 11 seconds to go.

A user disagreed and argued Jung wasn’t out.

Someone questioned Dean’s credentials as a good referee.

Lastly, one fan demanded that Dean be fined for his error.
