Georges St-Pierre believes Islam Makhachev will soon meet his match. The UFC lightweight champion successfully defended his belt against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284. He is not short of suitors as he awaits the next challenger. While the Russian fighter has been a force since dropping his only fight against Adriano Martins in 2015, his crown is threatened by up-and-coming challengers. Besides his presence in a competitive division, it might be his haughtiness that causes his downfall.
It is telling that the lightweight kingpin is on a 12-win streak. He rose to the ranks since his promotional debut and eased past his opponents. Likewise, he pushed away Charles Oliveira to claim the title at UFC 280 and then defended it against ‘The Great’. Further, the 31-year-old champion has unwavering faith in his grappling skills, which have played an instrumental role in his surge. However, many people believe he is becoming complacent, as evidenced by his recent remarks about his adversaries. And now the ‘Rush’ has hit the champion with a hard truth.

The 42-year-old said, “His [Islam Makhachev] skill sets are amazing. I mean, he’s a champion for a reason. But nobody is invincible. Everybody can lose. Everybody can make a mistake.”
The former UFC champion then pointed out to the division brimming with hot prospects and lethal fighters. The lightweight division has always been at the fulcrum of intense rivalries and home to fighters of a champion’s caliber.
GSP stated, “There’s a lot of competition in this weight class. [Lightweight division] is very competitive, so I’m interested to see who is going to go up against next.”

But Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s disciple has grown dismissive of his rivals.
In a recent clip that made rounds on Reddit, Makhachev boasted of not being afraid of the grappling skills of ‘do Bronx’. He went to the extent of claiming that he could take down the Brazilian fighter at will. He also put Volkanovski in the same bracket and expressed his willingness to face him again.
There is no word as of now when Makhachev will return to the Octagon.
