Spotify Forms a Safety Advisory Council After Joe Rogan Controversies

Joe Rogan is arguably one of the biggest podcasters in the world and hosts The Joe Rogan Experience. Although he’s a star, Rogan has previously come under fire for spreading misinformation regarding the COVID-19 vaccine. To prevent issues like these from happening in the future, Spotify revealed that it would form a “Spotify Safety Advisory Council.”
Spotify announced on its website yesterday that the firm has taken a new initiative by forming a safety council to tackle how it handles problems like misinformation and offensive content. The primary aim of this council is to make decisions regarding content moderation and implement policies that help with it.

Spotify wrote on its website, “At a high level, the council’s mission is to help Spotify evolve its policies and products in a safe way while making sure we respect creator expression. Our council members will advise our teams in key areas like policy and safety-feature development as well as guide our approach to equity, impact, and academic research.”

The firm also wrote, “Council members will not make enforcement decisions about specific content or creators.” This means that one can’t appeal to the firm’s decision about a specific creator or incident. Rather, the council will give feedback to help shape Spotify’s policies.

Being one of a kind and thought-provoking, it found early success and later boomed into one of the biggest podcasts worldwide. In May 2020, Rogan had announced on Instagram that he would be shifting his podcast to Spotify from September 1, 2020.
Although Spotify has released no official statements regarding the money involved in this deal, according to Wall Street Journal, this deal was worth at least $100 million. Rogan also stressed that this would not affect his show and that Spotify wouldn’t have any creative control.

Rogan would still upload clips of the show on his YouTube channel, but the full-length interviews would be available on Spotify exclusively. This has positively affected the podcast, with Rogan gaining several thousands of followers.
