In typical ‘Chaos’ fashion, UFC Welterweight Colby Covington lashes out a rant directed towards former title challenger Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson.

In a recent interview with Michael John, Covington spoke on multiple topics of relevance. Covington also shared his thoughts on the dynamic state of the UFC’s welterweight division. Dana White has previously assured that Covington would indeed be getting the next shot at Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. However, multiple other fighters in the division are standing at the cusp of a title shot.

Contenders like Leon Edwards, Stephen Thompson, Michael Chiesa, all seem to be one fight away from securing the next go at Usman. Because the welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is currently one of the busiest champions of the UFC, their number could come up soon.

UFC fans are soon to be treated with two matchups that are sure to make the welterweight title picture much clearer. #3 Leon Edwards is set to take on fan-favorite Nate Diaz in a 5-round fight at UFC 263. #2 Gilbert Burns and #5 Stephen Thompson will also battle at UFC 264 to further their claim at another title shot.

Stephen Thompson has always been the dark horse of the welterweight division. After getting knocked out by Anthony Pettis in 2019, he has amassed two stellar performances in the division. He fought Vicente Luque in a ‘Fight of the Night’ performance at UFC 244. Wonderboy of old began peaking again during that fight. After Luque, he faced another killer in Geoff Neal. His masterful striking ability saw him pull off a comfortable decision win over Neal.

The number one contender, Colby Covington, however, is not impressed with Wonderboy’s career resurgence. In the interview with MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn, he expressed why he feels Wonderboy doesn’t deserve another shot at gold.

Colby Covington lashes out another rant towards Wonderboy

“The guy is almost 40. Who’s had more title shots than Wonderboy? He’s on a two-fight winning streak. He beat a guy from Outback steak house (Geoff Neal) and then he beats some other jobber (Vicente Luque) and now he thinks he gets a title shot. Bro, you had like two or three title shots, more title shots than anybody in the division. Sit down, kid. And stop identifying as Wonderboy. You’re not a boy, you are a 40-year-old man and you drive kids around in a Karate truck,” Covington said.

Colby Covington has maintained a wary stance towards the perennial contender for some time now.

Wonderboy’s response to Covington’s comments has been mixed. He has dealt with Covington’s insults with grace in the past. He has maintained that he doesn’t like the persona built by Covington. Uncharacteristically, Wonderboy has also called out Covington because of his repeated trolling on social.

With Dana White confirming that Usman would in fact be taking on Covington next, race to the top is open for the rest of the top 10. Perhaps a fight between Covington and Wonderboy could soon be on the cards as well.

Who do you think would be on the top of the 17o pound division by the end of this year? Let us know.
