Islam Makhachev won against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284 in enemy territory. Still, he was not able to win over some of the fans and some experts despite winning via unanimous decision. Perhaps it wasn’t as big a dominant performance as fans have been accustomed to from Makhachev. Moreover, one expert weighs in on the topic to state how Makhachev ain’t that good compared to Khabib. Khabib Nurmagomedov is one of the greatest fighters in the history of the UFC. With an undefeated record of 29-0, he had dominated the lightweight division and cemented his place in the sport’s pantheon of legends. His ferocious grappling skills and imposing presence in the octagon have made him a fan favorite, and a feared opponent.

Despite retiring from the sport, Nurmagomedov’s influence is still felt in the UFC. He had taken on the role of coach for his fellow Dagestani fighter, Islam Makhachev, who many believe is the heir to Nurmagomedov’s throne. Makhachev has a similar fighting style and a record of 24-1. Moreover, has won the lightweight champion’s belt following in the footsteps of Nurmagomedov. They have such a great bond that the duo were seen talking after the fight.

Khabib and Makhachev share a common heritage and fighting style. However, they are distinct fighters with their unique strengths and weaknesses. It remains unclear whether Makhachev can live up to the sky-high expectations set by his mentor.

Islam Makhachev compared to Khabib Nurmagomedov’s legacy

Controversial journalist Ariel Helwani has garnered attention for his criticism of Islam Makhachev’s performance at UFC 284. Despite winning via unanimous decision, Makhachev was not as dominant as many had hoped and struggled in some moments during the fight. Helwani pointed out that Makhachev is not as invincible as many believe him to be, and that he is not yet on the same level as his mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

He said, “And I’m sorry he isn’t as good as Khabib. He is not, he is not as good as Khabib, He is not. At this stage 26 fights in, Khabib was more refined dominant better, he is not. That being said, he is one of the top best three fighters on the planet.

The reason for Helwani’s opinion is that Khabib never faced the same level of adversity that Makhachev did during his fight against Volkanovski. Khabib never got knocked out by lower-ranked opponents and never had a performance as lackluster as Makhachev’s on Saturday.

While Makhachev has the potential to be one of the best fighters in the world, he still has some ways to go before he can truly be compared to his legendary mentor. That’s something fans also agree with.
