UFC’s lightweight division, one of the most stacked and highly contested ones in the promotion, appears to be in a state of flux. While the current champion, Islam Makhachev, successfully held onto his gold, the quest for his next challenger started as soon as he triumphed over Alexander Volkanovski. Some argued for the much-awaited rematch, others advised pitting someone from the division against the Russian. However, as UFC president Dana White announced the fight involving Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush at UFC 288, a clearer picture emerged. Despite the recent announcement, some uncertainty persists about whether other surging contenders such as Rafael Fiziev might jump the lane.
The Azerbaijan fighter, however, has proclaimed to step aside in the favor of Dariush. The 29-year-old put himself pulled out of the contention, as he believes the American fighter deserved it “150%”.

Notably, ‘Ataman’ will square off against Justin Gaethje at the co-main event of UFC 286. A win against the prolific striker might propel the Phuket resident into the title contender’s spot. Regardless of the result, the 12-1 record holder believes the #4 ranked fighter deserves a shot before him.
Thus, talking to Submission Radio, he said, “Really, I don’t give a sh*t about it. If I beat Gaethje, I’m in a good position. If Oliveira wins, he goes and fights for the title, he deserves it. Dariush deserves it 150 percent. And if he wins that, I don’t want to stay on his road, because he really deserves it. I can wait.”
