When UFC star Shavkat Rakhmonov made Geoff Neal tap out at UFC 285, the UFC commentator Joe Rogan had a bold statement in his store. The American podcaster announced the streaking contender, who was slowly catching up to the fighters higher up the ladder, would fight for the title next.
The Kazakh fighter, who is the hottest property in the welterweight division, is stirring headlines recently for turning in skillful performances. With the latest win, he extended his unblemished record to 17-0. Further, his rumors with UFC commentator Laura Sanko and heated exchange with Khamzat Chimaev only boosted his popularity. Sonnen said, “People tell number one contendership, right? Joe Rogan said on the broadcast Rakhmonov’s next fight might be for a title. That is wildly helpful. Turned out Joe had it wrong but that’s wildly helpful.”
The MMA analyst backed his rationale as he referred to the recently announced Belal Muhammad and Gilbert Burns‘ match at UFC 288 that will decide the next in the line.
Following this, the Oregon native contended the upcoming match demarcated a line. Therefore, the questions surrounding Rakhmonov’s next opponent went unaddressed. Besides, it was difficult to find a matchup that could sell to the audience and also present a challenge to the fighter, who held a perfect 17-0 record and only a sole win separated him from fighting for a championship.
However, he had a name on his mind that checked out all the boxes.
Sonnen has his pick for Rakhmonov’s next fight
The 46-year-old asserted that former UFC champion Kamaru Usman fitted the bill. In addition, he suggested the fight between Usman and Rakhmonov would settle the debate for the rightful number 1 contender, regardless of what transpired on May 6th.
Thus, he summed up, “If Rakhmonov comes up on Kamaru, that will be the number one contender’s match and whatever you see on May 5th will be like it didn’t happen.”
