Sonnen also acknowledged that the fighter, corner-men, and referee may have different perspectives on when a fight should be stopped. He suggested that while the referee’s role is to ensure the safety of the fighters, the corner men’s role is to understand their fighter’s abilities and limitations and make the call to stop the fight if necessary. The veteran fighter’s corner also had middleweight champion, Alex Pereira.
