Veteran MMA Aficionado Joe Rogan Discloses His ‘Hard’ Experience as a Taekwondo Teacher – “When Sh*t Would Get Wild…”

Joe Rogan is an avid MMA enthusiast and always preached its importance. The popular podcaster is a qualified BJJ-Black belt holder who even taught GSP his signature spinning back-kick once. So, Rogan knows a thing or two about Jiu-jitsu, Sambo, Taekwondo, and other MMA techniques.

In a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast, the host shared a valuable tip for taekwondo aspirants. That almost applies to sportsmen in general. Rogan explained the importance of perfecting basics to maintain a strong grip on any subject. However, comparing Taekwondo to sports such as golf, it borrows the same principles of discipline and technique.

In episode 1924 of the JRE, Rogan expressed his learnings of how Taekwondo students behave under actual tournaments or bouts. The popular stand-up comedian is a UFC commentator and holds years of experience spreading the art of MMA.

Rogan also was the Massachusetts full-contact taekwondo champion for four consecutive years. So, from his days as a teacher, he trained various kids in Taekwondo.

Rogan said, “When I was teaching, It was very hard to teach someone who had already taken bad classes.”

Because “When sh*t would get wild, they’d always revert and they’d lose power, they would lose speed.”

The U.S. Taekwondo open grand champion believes that once a student gets distracted from the core teachings of Taekwondo, they start to panic under pressure.

This philosophy applies to mastering all art forms

Therefore, the taekwondo instructor believes having extensive knowledge of the basics, such as straight punches and hooks helps during those tense moments.

“It was all on the legs and not on the hips and you would try to like to teach these people, under pressure. They would always revert back to the earlier form.”

Because of this excited state, the young MMA aspirants lose speed and technique, as they go crazy with their moves and lose discipline, according to the former fear factor host.

Rogan said “You’re better off if you have that as an option. But you straight-punch most of the time.”

However, Joe Rogan added that properly trained students can throw in some new moves then and again, but never lose focus on the basics.
