WATCH: The Intense Moments Before Khabib Nurmagomedov Made Weight for UFC 254

One of the perils associated with the sport of mixed martial arts is the process of weight cutting. The juggernaut from Dagestan, Khabib Nurmagomedov, had a tough time making weight for his last fight at UFC 254. The UFC lightweight champion has given his fans a sneak-peek into the gruesome weight-cut that preceded his dominant performance against Justin Gaethje.

‘The Eagle’ is a big lightweight who cuts a significant amount of weight in fight week. He has even missed weight once in his career. Heading into UFC 254, Nurmagomedov had his task cut out for him. The death of his father had led to a lot of speculations if he could fight at his best or not. To shut down his doubters, the first step for him was to make weight.

In the video released on his YouTube channel, the fans get a glimpse of what the undefeated fighter from Russia went through in order to make weight. There are moments when he would simply collapse on the mat after cycling and running on the treadmill. He had to take help from his teammates even for trivial tasks such as getting up or even turning while on the ground.

The weigh-in of Khabib Nurmagomedov wasn’t devoid of controversy

Even though Khabib went through a lot behind-the-stage and made weight officially, it didn’t come without its share of controversy.

Nurmagomedov was the first one to step on the scale during the weigh-ins. He had to employ the services of a towel to do so. However, the actions of the official manning the scale raised several eyebrows. The official announced the weight way too quickly even before the balance had settled. Therefore, there were questions if Khabib had truly made the championship limit or not.

However, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s coach and American Kickboxing Academy head, Javier Mendez, termed the accusations as stupid. He added that his protege wasn’t struggling and at all and looked ‘strong as hell’.

Despite the ups and downs surrounding the weigh-in, Khabib left no questions with his performance at the main event of UFC 254. He shocked the world with his retirement right after the fight. As of right now, his future remains a bit uncertain. While he maintains that he is retired for good, UFC President Dana White has said that he feels Khabib as one more fight left in him.
