Few could forget when the American hopes to add more golds to the tally were jolted at the 2020 Japan Olympics when Simone Biles withdrew from the tournament. However, that wasn’t it. The dominant and effortless gymnast executing impossible maneuvers in 2020 was a common sight. The rift between her and her competitors grew with every competition. Authorities hence tried to level the playing field in a manner that left Joe Rogan unpleasant.

Before heading into the 2020 Olympics, the American gymnast had won four Olympic and 19 world championship golds. In addition, four eponymous skills bore her name. She was outperforming her opponent by miles by executing difficult maneuvers. How did the authorities react? By altering the points system, safety took a front seat instead of difficulty in execution. This didn’t sit well with the color commentator.

The 56-year-old sat down with Yannis Pappas in Ep. #1689 of JRE and discussed the buzz around Biles’ withdrawal from the coveted tournament. After running through her illustrious resume, the famed podcaster mentioned how efforts were made to make the competition close by altering the rules.

The reason behind it, as Rogan explained, was, “Because she can do sh*t that other people can’t do. There was a video that was describing how they’re literally altering the rules. To make what she does less impressive or scores less, whatever.”

The International Gymnastics Foundation tried to make the competition more competitive and less dominant. “They don’t want the field to be too far apart,” Biles once told the NY Times. However, lower rewards for higher risks weren’t her only concern. She also had to deal with mental health issues, and her battles with the authorities continued, albeit on the Asian continent.

Biles and her woes in Japan

The 26-year-old gymnast failed to take her ADHD medication because Ritalin was banned in the country. Therefore, she struggled with her focus. She later withdrew from the competition. Partly due to twisties, a partial loss of air balance awareness, and partly to focus on her mental health.

Following this, she became subjected to online hate, and many called her a coward for backing down. Shunning down those haters, Rogan also declared, “She is not chicken.” Biles then went on a two-year hiatus after the Olympics. She recently jumped back into the competitive world as she became the oldest woman to win the U.S. Gymnastics Championships. What do you make of these comments by Joe Rogan?
