Sean O’Malley and Cody Garbrandt are most likely headed to separate paths in their careers. Garbrandt wants to move down to 125-pounds. On the other hand, O’Malley is looking to climb the rankings of the bantamweight division.
However, that doesn’t stop them from going back and forth on Twitter.
The former champ Cody Garbrandt has talked a lot about his intentions of dropping down to flyweight. His last fight was a knockout victory over Raphael Assuncao at bantamweight at UFC 250.

In the win, he snapped a three-fight losing skid. Garbrandt believes that his weight isn’t an issue if he decides to drop down a weight class.
Garbrandt reiterated his emotions about the same when he talked to ESPN. O’Malley took notice of Garbrandt’s words and implied that he was running away from the challenges at 135-pounds.
Not one to take an insult quietly, Garbrandt fired back at the young prospect who has just broken into the Top-15 of the division.
Even though there is a big hype around the undefeated O’Malley, he is yet to face a ranked opponent inside the Octagon.

Can Cody Garbrandt and Sean O’Malley meet anytime soon?
Just like Garbrandt, the last outing of O’Malley came at UFC 250. He earned a knockout victory over former WEC champ Eddie Wineland. It was at this event that the feud between O’Malley and Garbrandt began.
The 25-year-old O’Malley knows that fighting a former champ could be a big push for his career. Hence, he isn’t letting the opportunity to beef with him go away easily.

On the other hand, it seems like Garbrandt is adamant about making a drop-down in the weight class. With a not so deep flyweight division, Garbrandt can easily string together his path to a title.
As far as the fight between Sean O’Malley and Cody Garbrandt is concerned, it makes more sense for O’Malley than it does for Cody. He is the young and hot prospect who is looking to move up the food chain quickly.
Had they stayed in the same division, a fight would have been easier to make. However, with Garbrandt dropping down, there isn’t a certain timeline that their expected fight can be pinned down to.
