“A Disgrace for the Sport”: Unlike Serena Williams and Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic Came Down Hard on Lance Armstrong Following His Confession in 2013

The entire sports sector suffered greatly as a result of the Lance Armstrong controversy. This revelation had a big impact on almost every sport and athlete. Many sports personalities voiced their opinions about the infamous incident. While legends from tennis offered distinct perspectives, Novak Djokovic had tough words for Armstrong.

Back in 2013, Novac was playing in the Australian Open when the infamous interview aired. Media asked Novak’s opinion about the incident, but he didn’t seem to be in a diplomatic mood.

Novak Djokovic wanted tough actions against Lance Armstrong

Novak Djokovic slammed Lance Armstrong and condemn his actions. He further added that Lance’s attempts to defend him would be an act of foolishness. He said, “It would be ridiculous for him to decline and refuse all the charges because it has been proven”. Serena Williams and Roger Federer had also presented their thoughts on the incident before Novak. But Novak’s words seemed to be the most blunt.

Serena and Roger pointed out the fact that the doping scandal would harm the credibility of other sports and athletes. However, Novak went personal and wanted people never to forgive Lance for his deeds. “I think he should suffer for his lies for all these years”, he added.

Novak went further and said that Lance had cheated on the spirit of the sport and many people around the world with his career. He said, “It’s a disgrace for the sport to athletes like this”. The Grand slam champion said that achieving success by distorted means cannot be accepted.

Novak lost faith in the credibility of sports

Novak admitted that he used to follow cycling sport and its biggest name. He felt that the grueling races contributed to the bigger picture of doping in other sports. Just like every other Novak, too, lost faith in the fairness of the races.

Novak was stunned after seeing Oprah’s interview. He was a regular viewer of cyclists like Lance Armstrong and Marco Pantani. “I lost a lot of faith in cycling,” he said. But, he also believed that other cyclists have been practicing with utmost discipline and dedication. No one can take away the credit from honest athletes as they are the real torch bearer of the legacy of any sport.
