21-year-old Shilese Jones is staging an extraordinary comeback. The gymnast indeed has her sights on the Parisian fiesta. It was not rosy, however. Two years back, she had nearly quit elite gymnastics after the trials for the Tokyo Olympics. After a windy journey of accidents, injuries, and the painful death of her father in 2021, Jones’ grit showed, as she took home the silver medal in the all-around at the World Championships 2022. In 2023, Jones, as a part of Team USA, clinched the seventh consecutive World Championships title in the team finals. In another milestone, Jones secured a bronze medal in the floor exercise as well.

Shilese Jones’ journey is nothing short of extraordinary. However, that does not take away the struggle of the backstage. Despite this momentous victory, post-event, she opened up about the mental pressure she faced during the event.

Shilese Jones speaks of her anxiety

FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships 2023 and USA Gymnastics, shared a video of Shilese Jnes on their Instagram post-event. The caption reads, “Little chat with bronze medalist.” During the interview, Jones candidly discussed her performance at the Women’s All-Around Final. She shared, “A little bit of difference. Of course, I had my teammate out there, Simone. Overall it was great. Ended on floor, it was a little crazy, but I’m just happy to go 4 for 4 and be able to be on the podium again.”

Jones also reflected on her highlights, noting, “My highlights, probably beam. Beam has been a little up and down when I go to compete; I just get a little bit nervous. But in training and stuff, it’s been going so well. So just channeling my emotions and being able to hit it like I do at practice.” However, in spite of that nervousness, undoubtedly Jones exhibited exceptional performances throughout the night against the big names.

On Vault, she delivered a massive Yurchenko double full, earning her a score of 14.233. On Uneven Bars, she scored 14.633 points. On Balance Beam, her dismount, a double pike, was executed with excellence and an impeccable landing, earning her a score of 14.066. And lastly, on Floor Exercise, she received a score of 13.400 for her routine. The final standings of the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships had her teammate the legendary Simone Biles, earn the gold medal with a score of 58.399.

Meanwhile, Brazilian sensation Rebeca Andrade took away the Silver with 56.766. Jones earned her bronze with a remarkable 56.332. In December 2021, when Jones’ father, Sylvester, passed away, an emotional wrote that her dad dreamt of seeing her on the Olympic stage. She recalled how her father would tirelessly drive her to practice sessions, no matter how tired he was after his dialysis sessions.
