New York Yankees Close In on Star All-Rounder That Could Solve Major Offensive Weakness

The 2021 season saw the New York Yankees fail to make an impact in terms of the postseason. Despite recording a 92-70 record in the regular season, they lost the AL Wildcard game to the Boston Red Sox, which is a disappointment considering their success in the MLB.
One of their weaknesses, surprisingly enough came in the batting department. The Yankees didn’t score as many runs as they could with the talent they had, which made many believe they would target a strong hitter in the off-season. Recent rumors indicate they could sign Matt Olson, who starred for the Oakland Athletics in 2021.

While his performances speak volumes, the statistics he recorded back him up just as much. Recently, Jon Morosi indicated how he would fit in the Yankees’ roster.
The New York Yankees are considering a trade for Matt Olson
Although the A’s missed out on the postseason in 2021, Olson produced one of his finest seasons since joining them in 2016. The southpaw recorded a staggering 101 runs and drove in 111 RBI. In addition, he scored 39 home runs, with his exploits earning him his first All-Star call-up. Apart from his hitting, the 27-year-old also produced excellent numbers as a first baseman, recording 6+ DRS on the field.
The 2021 season showed the Yankees’ shortcomings with left-handed batters. Although Anthony Rizzo produced a decent amount of runs, he is now a free agent. With only three other southpaws on the team, Olson could be a great fit for the team should the Yankees decide on a trade.

According to MLB insider Jon Morosi, the Yankees need a left-handed hitter and Olson fits the bill in terms of his ability.

He said, “They hit only 42 home runs this season among all their left-handed batters against right-handed pitchers. Olson himself had 39 home runs this season. That is why they want Matt Olson via trade this winter.
“The 42 home runs from the Yankees, that ranked third from the bottom in all of Major League Baseball in home runs by lefty batters. That is simply not the identity of the New York Yankees.”

The Yankees are also considering Corey Seager as an option
While they need a left-handed hitter, the Yankees also need a shortstop. Seager fills both these blanks, and unlike Olson, he can be signed as a free agent.
The Yankees also have strong links to fellow free agent Carlos Correa, who starred for the Houston Astros last year. However, with the need to gain balance amongst right and left-handed hitters, Seager and Olson produce strong cases individually to join the most decorated team in the MLB.
