Never in one’s wildest dreams would they have imagined an end as dramatic as yesterday’s Formula 1 race. 7-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton led the race for the first 57 laps; until in came Max Verstappen and won his first F1 championship. In a highly contested year, the duo engaged in a neck-to-neck battle, throughout the entire season, which many believe ended on a controversial note, in Abu Dhabi last night.

Now, former track and field legend, Michael Johnson, expresses his feelings over the same.

Significantly, driver Nicholas Latifi’s crash changed the entire course of the race. It led to unexpected events as Verstappen cruised to victory in the final lap. Most fans seemed confused with this decision, including Johnson, who voiced out his concerns on Twitter.

Michael Johnson needs some time

Post-race, the former legendary athlete tweeted about the unfair advantage team Red Bull received, which led to Max winning the title. Even though Mercedes launched a complaint at the end of the race, the FIA dismissed their protests. Thus, Max Verstappen was crowned as the 2021 Formula One Champion. Understandably, the result was a tough pill to swallow for LH fans. Addressing the same, Michael took to Twitter, sharing his frustration.

“Think I might be done watching @F1 until they replace stewards and race control with actual fair rules that are enforced consistently,” said Johnson.

Even as several fans continue to voice out their concerns, it is safe to say, this season will be remembered for a long time, for good reasons and for bad. When Hamilton took the lead at the beginning of the race, he maneuvered his drive to perfection. However, things took a dramatic turn during the final stages of the race.

When Latifi crashed in the last stages of the race, they deployed the safety car and Verstappen got stuck behind lapped cars. However, the FIA allowed him to pass on as they decided on one final racing lap. With him pitting under the safety car, he changed the tyres to soft, to get a significant advantage over Hamilton’s hard tyres.

This proved to be a major difference. As the circuit was long with plenty of overtaking spots, Max overtook Hamilton in the last lap, leading to a controversial ending.

To sum it up, most fans, including Michael Johnson, were beyond angry at the decision. Nonetheless, the season and its final race will go down in history for its drama, its intensity, and its champion, Max Verstappen.
