According to McGowens, the team’s rapid bond formation stemmed from their journeys of striving to break through in their professional careers. Each player on the squad, which included talents like Jalen Lecque, Matthew Hurt, and Bryce Wills alongside McGowens, was focused on personal growth and advancement.
McGowens’s scoring level took him to the 3×3 U23 World Cup Team in the tournament, with the points of 54 points. To prepare, he delved into video analysis of other 3×3 basketball stars, particularly Jimmer Fredette, to decipher the intricacies of the game. McGowens diligently worked on showcasing his three-point shooting, mirroring aspects of Fredette’s game.
Yet, it wasn’t just the shooting. McGowens had to master the art of navigating the confined court space characteristic of 3×3 basketball. In his own words, “You have to get to your moves a little bit quicker.” The quick pace and half-court setting required a strategic approach. Now, as McGowens readies for the G League training camp in October, transitioning from 3×3 to 5-on-5 might seem daunting, but he sees it as an opportunity to stay in shape and enhance his defensive abilities.

McGowens’ winning mindset beyond the court
The journey to his current position has been far from straightforward. Undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft and initially cut from his first NBA G League team, McGowens has overcome numerous obstacles. However, his ability to focus on the bigger picture, setting his sights on his goals two to three years down the line, has been his guiding philosophy.
It’s a mindset shared by his younger brother Bryce, who’s now with the Charlotte Hornets. Bryce’s journey from a two-way contract to a standard NBA deal serves as a source of inspiration for Trey. The two brothers not only share a deep bond but also a shared commitment to achieving their basketball dreams.
