A story has come out to the limelight of the inconsistent judging by judges for snowboarding competitions at the Beijing Winter Olympics. All the half-pipe, slope-style and big-air competitions have seen inconsistent scoring systems by the judges. Hence, there have been many inquiries into the matter. With the inconsistency prevalent in many events, some snowboarders have questioned this matter.

Some glaring errors which were made in slopestyle competitions have come up. Likewise, the half-pipe competition saw Ayumu Hirano and Shaun White battle it out, but there was confusion regarding Hirano’s second run. Snowboarder Red Gerard spoke about the matter as controversies emerge.

Confusion at the Beijing Winter Olympics

The sensational Red Gerard became the first snowboarding medalist to be born in the 2000s. His incredible story of over-sleeping and then going on to win the title is legendary. During this year’s slopestyle competition, the judges wrongly credited a score to Canadian gold medalist Max Parrot according to ESPN. He got credited a good score for holding his snowboard on one trick but later replays showcased him holding his knee. Thus, the minute error made in the scoring system has caused him to question the judges.

“I never cared about any of this, and all of a sudden, I find myself caring. It’s a bummer. It’s just like, this has been brought to my eye over the last month-ish that we’ve been here. It’s just been hard on everyone. It’s heartbreaking. There’s nothing they can do after they put the scores in to change it. ? You’re talking about, this is life-changing for some people, you know?” said Gerard.

Gerard finished fourth in the competition. Similarly, the backside 1620 scored by Gerard was lower than his rival in the big-air competition, which had him questioning the decision.

Not only did Gerrard face the same problem. The half-pipe competition saw Ayumu Hirano getting credited with lower points as well.

Hirano’s excellent second run

With Shaun White appearing in his last Olympic Games, the focus was all on whether he could finish his career on the podium. But, with Ayumu Hirano dominating the competition in recent years, he remained the favorite heading for the event. The difference got noticed during Hirano’s second run, where he landed the first-ever triple cork in the Olympics.

Despite that, he ended up scoring lesser, after which he scored even better in the last run, using the same tricks. Hence, there were glaring inconsistencies.

The lead officials voiced the problem as they spoke about not providing replays or any shots and it made it harder to judge. What the organizers decide is something to wait and watch.
