Ever wondered why bobsled is a dangerous sport? It is simply because it is fast. A large sized-equipment that carries people on a thin ice sled track, it is one of the most exhilarating sports in the world. Although, the dangers of mishaps are unmeasurable. Significantly, Team Britain’s gold medal hopes for the bobsled event suffered a major setback at the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022. Thankfully though, the two athletes left out of their sled unharmed after they crashed on the track.

Brad Hall and Nick Gleeson are the major medal contenders for their country. Hence, the fans in Yanqing National Sliding center held their breath but applauded them as they walked away from the incident.

Team GB suffers crash in bobsled competition at Beijing Winter Olympics

Crashes have become customary for athletes at the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022, rather unfortunate incidents. Some have suffered major injuries while others get up and continue to take part. As for Hall and Gleeson, they misjudged a corner that led to the crash. The sled overturned to their side, carrying them down the straight. Miraculously though, fans loved when they walked out of the sled and walked away. Martin Haven on Eurosport commentary mentioned the crash while commentating as he followed them play-by-play.

“He?s hanging it out for speed, desperate to make the top 10. There is the danger out of Corner 13, lots of crashes in training. That is the first one we?ve seen in the race. Nick giving Brad a big hug. Don?t worry mate, it happens. It?s racing, that?s what it is. This is not gently driving down the track, this is 75mph, absolutely on the ragged edge,” said Haven.

Earlier during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Georgia’s Nodar Kumaritashvili suffered a fatal crash during the bobsled competition, sending shockwaves around. As for these guys, there is a light at the end of the tunnel as they finished 11th despite their crash. A combined time of 3:59.92 and made a great comeback.

On a lighter note, when they got out of their sled and started walking, they received huge cheers from people in attendance. This reminded up of the famous incident at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. The Jamaican bobsled team made their debut but ultimately crashed during their run. After a shocking crash, they walked to the straight, getting a huge ovation from the fans.

It was a nice way for Team GB’s Hall and Gleeson, as they leave Beijing, with their heads held high.

An athlete needs to leave the venue unhurt and luckily, a major disaster was averted.
