While he would go head-to-head with Coleman on stage, Cutler and he would often train together for various competitions. But training, merely, isn’t enough to bulk up and face one’s opponents. The millionaire champion had an insane diet put together to help him with his goals.

In a conversation with journalist and podcast host Adam Glyn, Cutler went back to reflect on certain elements of his diet. What was the magic formula that helped him win multiple Mr. Olympia titles? Let’s find out.

Outrages carbs and bulked up proteins: Jay Cutler had the diet of champions

Jay Cutler’s career spanned from the age of 18 to about 40. Throughout this period, the champion’s diet and training routine saw many changes. This was what he highlighted right away. However, certain approaches toward the diet were the same throughout his bodybuilding stint.

For starters, he recalled how he followed a high-protein diet, that involved 350 to 400 grams of protein a day. This meant a breakfast of 20 egg whites and a whole lot of chicken, turkey, and other forms of meat. In fact, his meat intake alone went up to about 12-16 ounces in an average-sized meal!

Cutler recalled how his meals grew enormously by the time he began his Mr. Olympia wins. He stated how his carb intake had also changed, “the carbohydrates were outrageous I mean anywhere between 400 to 1000 grams of carbohydrates a day”. All of this amounted to a total of 6000 calories a day! But was there something that the champion avoided consuming?

Cutler’s one golden rule about a good diet

While having a strict diet seems essential to one’s bodybuilding journey, Jay Cutler once felt the need to bust a myth going around about various fitness diets and regimes.

In his newsletter, the former Mr. Olympia pointed out how many fitness enthusiasts resorted to eating foods they hated. This was a problem in one’s bodybuilding journey. Cutler strongly believed that one must eat whatever one liked. So, if one hated a fish meal that they were supposed to consume for their fitness journey, the champion had a fitting reply – “Just don’t eat that s***”.
