The bodybuilding legend, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has led an illustrious career. Though after six years of him winning his last Mr. Olympia title, he tied the knot with American journalist Maria Shriver in 1986. Before they got married, they were together for almost nine years. However, soon after they had their fourth child, the pair announced their split in May 2011.

The reason behind Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver’s divorce

In 2012, Arnold opened up about his relationship with Maria to CBS host Lesley Stahl on “60 Minutes.” Lesley asked him some profound questions about his marriage and he answered all of them boldly. The bodybuilding legend further revealed why things didn’t work out between the couple. He said, “I have heard so many times that a lot of relationships when you are a politician have a tendency of falling apart or getting hit.”

Although it may sound a little frivolous, Arnold had his valid reasons. He added, “Because of having to spend so much time on your work. I saw it all of a sudden happening that I got so engrossed in the work and I got so kind of fanatic about it to solving the problems that many times we had budget discussions to midnight to 6:00 in the morning and there was all the stuff coming up.”

Arnold didn’t have time for his family

According to the Terminator, his busy working schedule as the governor of California was the main reason behind his family falling apart. A full-time political role contributed to him missing family events. And subsequently, it put a lot of strain on his relationship with Maria. Hence, came the point when the separation was unavoidable.

However, the bodybuilding legend admits it was not all because of his work. He made some serious mistakes too.

Though now he can’t change the past, so perhaps the only thing left is regrets and lessons.
