Bodybuilder Calum Von Moger, Who Went Into Coma, Finally Opens Up on His Health

The 2018 film Bigger traced the journey of Joe Weider and his brother who together overcame antisemitism and poverty to build a bodybuilding empire for young talents to thrive. Calum Von Moger, an Australian bodybuilder, played a  young Arnold Schwarzenegger in the docudrama and it became his most well-known claim to fame. Moger, currently 32, has pursued professional bodybuilding for more than a decade now but this past year has particularly been rough for him.

With the advent of 2023, 3x Mr. Universe champion Calum Von Moger shared an update with fans. Earning his fair share of repute in Hollywood with his phenomenal performance as the Austrian Oak, things took a gloomy turn for him with a series of unfortunate incidents in 2022. Here’s what happened.

Von Moger took to his Instagram and shared a clip detailing his current situation in life. He said, “For those who don’t know, earlier this year I was in a bad accident and I really hurt myself. And, so, I had to take some time off to heal and recover and also I was going through a lot at the time. So, I apologize for my absence. But I’m doing so much better now. I got all the help I needed.”

He further wrote about how difficult the year 2022 must have been for everyone, his new venture with a company, and other things which he wishes to speak about at length later in a podcast or interview. He mainly apologized for his long-term absence from social media. A long caption accompanied the clip, which shared the same sentiment but in different words.

Von Moger’s bad accident was when he fell from a second-story window in his home in Geelong, Melbourne on May 6, 2022. He was severely injured almost to the point of turning fatal. He was left in an induced coma and was fighting for his life.

His 2022 troubles started when he returned to his native Australia in October 2021 from California. He lived in LA for 7 years where he moved to pursue acting and bodybuilding. After taking a break, he had an altercation with someone which was the start of his troubled string of events.

The health woes that threw Moger into a dark place

In January 2022, Von Moger was in a road rage incident in Melbourne and stabbed another man’s tire with a knife. Days later, police pulled him over for driving without license plates where they also discovered steady amounts of methamphetamine, cannabis, proviplex, and viaplex. His lawyer helped him escape conviction by citing a carjacking incident in LA that left him traumatized. Von Moger plead guilty to a slew of charges and returned to LA to reunite with his son Kyros.

He checked into a rehab facility to fight his drug addiction and chose the long, hard road to recovery. In his Instagram post, he also wrote, “I’d been battling depression and anxiety for some time and found myself in a rough patch earlier this year.” He also thanked all his well-wishers who supported him and stood by him in his tough times. He wrote, “Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart for all your concerns and prayers. I’m ready to return here in 2023. See you soon!”
