“Cut Out a Piece of My Kidney”: Reigning Mr. Olympia, Chris Bumstead, Suffered the Most Horrible Few Days of His Life in a Hospital in 2018

Chris Bumstead, the defending champion of Mr. Olympia Classic Physique who’s eyeing his straight fourth title in Mr. Olympia this year, waded through a career-shattering chapter of life with absolute grit and determination in 2018. The 3 x Mr. Olympia once became emotional as he opened up on his clueless health condition and his endless anticipation on the hospital bed.

Bumstead, the Canadian IFBB pro bodybuilder, is renowned for his calm demeanor. He stood second in his debut Mr. Olympia in 2017, and there has been no looking back since then. Despite going through an uncalled-for situation at a crucial time in his career, Bumstead didn’t give up on his ambition.

Chris Bumstead found his legs and body swollen

As Bumstead was gearing up for his second Mr. Olympia, he found his physique, his most-priced possession, losing gaining weight due to water retention. “At this point and looking like cra* like just a water buffalo, ” said Chris in a 2018 interviewThe reports then revealed high levels of protein and creatinine. Although it is normal for a bodybuilder to have higher than normal levels, he “was kind of freaky” on noticing blood in his urine.

When it was decided that the condition had to do something with the kidneys, they “cut out a piece of my kidney” to conduct a biopsy. Bumstead spent sleepless nights on the hospital bed, struggling with the changes his body was challenging him with and anxiety about his condition.

The doctor prescribed diuretics to flush out excess water from the body and sent him home. The Canadian bodybuilder shared the mental affliction induced by his condition and a feeling of helplessness about not being able to follow his pre-competition routine. Nevertheless, he finished off with the runner-up title in 2018.

Bumstead banks on stem cell treatment

The Classic Physique winner was diagnosed with IGA Nephropathy–an autoimmune kidney disorder. It is a condition where his immunity attacks his organs instead of protecting them. Bumstead shared a video of undergoing stem cell treatment, considering that many studies have shown to help modulate the immunity system from sabotaging itself.

Furthermore, he shared“I’m going to be using something called mesenchymal stem cells, which comes from the umbilical cord of a recently birthed baby.” On the other side is his uncompromising preparation for Mr. Olympia 2022.
